the helpless plea that echoes in my mind…

I have a devoted househelp at my service for over 15 years now. She has a rural background. When she came to work for me, the first day on taking the broom in her hands she said, ‘Akka please don’t allot separate plate and tumbler for me! Otherwise i don’t want to work for you!’ I wasn’t planning to do that. Those words rooted me to my spot. I felt ashamed of myself to be instilling such a fear on this village girl. She is like my younger sister ever since. After sometime she noticed that I was using the same coffee mug, my son used his etc., and that we did not mix towels or soaps or any personal thing even within the family. It is after a month she told me to give her her own glass and plate because in my family, everyone had our own plate, glass that we wouldn’t interchange. Even pillows and blankets. Still i did not tell my girl firsthand what was our house practice. I let the girl find out. In my case, there was never a discrimination. One thing my help keeps telling me is, after coming to me all those years back she for the first time was shocked by receiving equal, humane treatment. Nobody gave her that respect that was due to her all these years. My help has access to all my house, all my things and my trust in her is one hundred percent. That very trust of mine in her endeared me to her. When I am down, it is she who cooks for me. One day I surprised my friends with her cooking – yes, my orthodox school friends. They couldn’t believe she was such a fine cook. They were at loss of words. Respect also means that we share our food with our househelp when it is still piping hot and can be savoured heartfully – not as leftover always. This is what I do. If i make something special or even my daily food, I first share with my help. I give her her share as she finishes my morning chore. That simple gesture would touch her immensely. When my husband would be around, she would say, ‘akka, let anna eat around first. let me take my share in the evening.’ Even my help’s friend is like my sister. Whenever my girl takes leave, this girl comes to run some errands for me and do the chores. First time the girl came to my house, she had a similar plea for me: ‘akka please don’t differentiate and allot me a lota separately. i feel very hurt.’ These words still reverberate in my ears. The second girl worked for someone else. She would tell me how her employer would not allow her to move freely giving her only the leftovers and old clothes. The girls like me for the only reason that I treat them as fellow human beings, nothing special. I got both the girls silk saris for a family function this year. They had tears in their eyes when I asked them to pick that had never happened to them before. That i got them very same saris like for my friends was what touched them most. For my part, i never did anything extraordinary. I realized just treating someone human can also move them so much…

My friends and even my family say I lavish on the girls which is untrue. The truth is that I treat them as an equal. Treat them like they are my friends and own sisters. This is what has won me their loyalty and love and affection. Today the son of my regular househelp has graduated and daughter is on the verge of graduating. First time LITERATES by the way in their entire joint family. I won’t deny i have played a role in pushing them to this purpose and asking them to improve their living standards in every way. I can help only those closest to me, being a woman in this society with limited connections. Even if i improve the lives of 2-3 girls in this lifetime of mine, i count it as a blessing.

I am asking this society only one question: if someone should beg us not to give them separate glasses and plates, what kind of monsters are we supposed to be. How much more can we stamp on others’ dignity and self-respect. How much have we psychologically damaged them, destroyed them. How have we broken their hearts to a thousand pieces. We are worse than the Taliban really. They kill physically. We wound fellow humans emotionally dashing and killing their hopes. This passive aggression is what I view as most heinous because it goes unnoticed. It is not viewed as an act of violence at all. The hypocrisy thrives, flourishes dividing societies.

How did the discrepancies creep up in the first place and get entrenched so deeply in our midst. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that traditionally (meaning for many centuries) some occupying the seats of honour while others slugging it out at the bottom has been the way the society functioned. The vast majority of population probably remained complacent or their protests were quietened in no time. The status quo prevailed until realization set in. It means a reshuffle is the way forward.

I think it is time we plug all loopholes that may lead to tear from our social fabric. There just cannot be any justification on the basis of birth for this senseless discrimination we still practice in our homes.

At the same time, the girls’ determination also revealed to me, how they will not allow themselves to be treated in future. Which ideology did influence them? Both cannot read a letter. It is useless blaming political leadership when the awareness is happening. Kudos to the girls for their sense of dignity and respect. In my case, they needn’t have feared. But it is a lesson for all of us: if we deny respect and equal space for anyone from any sphere, then they will be obliged to claim it from us forcefully. In Tamil Nadu temple case, this is what is happening today.

do the graveyard shift.

I see so much of venom spewed ever since the OBC archakas tookover their assigned jobs in Agama temples. Remember, these too graduated from Vedic schools and are not without a background. I can imagine how worse it could have been for EVR all those years back and for Gandhiji to break the caste barricades and bring Hindus together as never before in over a two thousand year written history of India. Only solace is that, the media was absent then, especially social media. Crass characters like Subrahmanyam Swamy today are discussing the Tamil Nadu situation whereas he is yet to explain to the public here his role in Jayalalitha’s case and demise. If he had had any strength of character, no central govt would have rejected him. It doesn’t matter if you are Harvard returned, when you are found to be unreliable like this other one Shashi Tharoor, you will not find a good position anywhere because you are just that: not trustworthy and characterless.

I am not sure how much of physical violence was used to manhandle archakas in employment in which case it is totally wrong. But the archakas also can embrace the new appointees with more broadmind as their apprentices and train them in their order. What Ramanuja did centuries back, why should it be impossible to do in the 21st century.

What is bhakthi without an element of empathy. It is those in the service of God who must have more compassion and understanding. It n’t it strange that those who want to get into service of god are called the adharmic and those who are going adharmic are claiming to be dharmic.

Which shastra sampradhaya and dharmika have the caste hindus already not violated? At the cost of repeating myself I would like to record here that. the day a hindu (read brahmin) woman decided to wear double mangalsutra from two men and carry the child in her womb fathered by an unknown donor and the day a brahmana decided to take the work of a kasappukadaikaran butchering meat and going further on sampling liquor for making a living, the dharmic equations got altered. Ilai marai kaai maraivaa nadandhuthaan ellam. But when legal sanction was accorded to these transgressions redefining a pre-existant dharma, nobody can have the moral or ethical right any more to bar anyone from anywhere quoting scriptures or traditions. The truth is, not many non-brahmins can bring themselves to cross these undrawn limiting lines as easily as these folks do. I am not asking anyone not to remarry or have a child from anyone they please. And i have nothing to do with their eating habits. In fact i am for reforms that can make life better for our women. It is only when some parties flout what suits them and want others to abide by the unwritten code, there is a problem.

Whether we want it or not, at some point in history, this is going to happen. This holding back of knowledge, art is deeply disturbing and can be damaging to even our economy. I have noted that as expected, none of the national news channels covered the pathbreaking historical move made by Tamil Nadu govt in the matter.

To bring about awareness, our govt can consider this:

The brahmin population of the state is stated to be around 2%. I am not sure about Mudaliar or Nadar or Chetty or Pillai or Nair or Naidu or Jain population. On pro-rata basis, every caste must be allotted their graveyard shift in the various crematoria spread across the state, manual or mechanized. These groups can be given the rights to assemble their own team from their own caste members. The 2% brahmin population may still have to work for about 7 days out of the yearly 365 at the crematoria burning bodies. A similar shift can be considered for the scavenging work. Road kuppaya allanum, koottanum. I am not singling out one community. Let everyone share the duty as per their percentage population in the national census. And I am including even the christians and muslims in this list of scavenging job. I am leaving them out of the crematoria work quota because they have their own where things are not done on caste basis.

This can be an eye opener to the self certified puritanical groups and help them realize whose sweat and blood and dignity their ancestors sucked to put them above the rest of the lot. First of all, the much waned dignity of labour will be restored to full vigor in Indian society.

Reservation is for this purpose: when you cannot find a housemaid or street hawker or a crematorium worker or a sweeper in your community or relative circle, it means you are socially emancipated even if not materially very rich. In which case, you are expected to pull others out of their deprived situation with helping hands. This is what humanity is all about.

When did the castes/varnas come into vogue. They find no mention in the Vedas. They are the later additions. Shastra and Sampradayas to my knowledge can be dismantled or suspended or rewritten or altered.

What is this Agama vidhi, May be this is something that makes stops you from climbing out of the ritualistic quagmire? I remember the men in my family frowning against the Devasham rituals running for days. They would say, the said group divided themselves into two. One went to temples and took over the powerful societal position of serving the gods. Those who could not fit into temples that were not big employers, invented purohit work to keep themselves busy and earn a living! Personally I believe, it is more important to respect and treat a human with kindness when he or she is around. I do not believe in endless rituals year after year after the concerned person is gone. Once you leave agama schools, you find that there is no need to stick to caste-prescribed boundaries. You realize the entire set up has been put into place to maintain the same hierarchy for centuries. This i am not saying to disrespect anyone. But i have always awowed how cleverly some communities took care of themselves and kept themselves out of the harms way with ingeniously designed self-preservation techniques. No need to fight the kings battles. No need to sweat under a sweltering sun. Finest settlements in the agrahara with water wells. Safe life while the others slogged it out.

Many have been telling me to slowly come out of the ritualistic worship. May be I am now ready to go to the next step. I am already feeling a strong desire never to tow this line again. Rituals do help me focus better. I am able to give a shape to my spiritual goals. But many hindus are already leaving behind the ritualistic religion and taking a step forward. May be this is the way we can bring to an end the caste hypocrisy when whatever these guys say won’t matter to us.

We are having Tamizh weddings in our families already for past many years where we have dispensed with services of purohits. Instead we recite Tamil mantras. I have for friends who have had ‘seerthirutha tamizh kalyanams.’ Their children are now like trophies, not in anyway wanting.

Passive aggression is one of the most cruel forms of violence because it allows you to belittle fellow humans as if they are sub-humans while placing yourselves in a far better and superior position only by virtue of birth. This is most abominable mind-set. Knowledge to me is for sharing. Inclusive growth is important for national development. Caste is one reason India is backward. Caste is also the main reason for conversion post 1947 (and even prior to 1947).

I used to be sick of the curd rice stories. Then I turned against my friends and asked them, still why did the curd rice prevent them from becoming geniuses like the jews or japanese or even the koreans. What new inventions and discoveries in last 2000 years after Aryabhatta and Bhaskara. It is you who claim they were yours. In truth in Bharatha, whether scientist or mathematician or spiritual guru or even a nayanmar or alwar, anyone making a mark was absorbed by the brahminical fold after their lifetimes as theirs. Like we posthumously award Ashok chakra today to war heroes.

After the puritanical mind set in (I can peg this about the time of Shankaracharya) dividing the population on communal lines, you cannot observe any significant scientific temper in Hindu history. Once the hypocritical mind takes over, the genius vanishes. This is the truth.

Transported back to 1947 when a struggle of another kind was taking place in the south especially to usher in social reforms. I can imagine why EVR Periyar is so much villainified now. He did the unthinkable. 75 years later can we imagine otherwise?

The south has always been the trendsetter which is why we prosper better than the north. The north is steeped in casteist hypocrisy. You cannot have someone like Yogi boldly enact reforms as they are done in the south in another 1000 years. It needs courage and commitment to a cause.

Finally as a believer and a practising Hindu, I repeat, without Mother Goddess wanting it this way, this just cannot happen. Women may step into Lord Aiyappa’s abode in Sabarimala legally today because perhaps, Aiyappa thinks the time is ripe for that. Raam got his Ayodhya back, not you or me. If you are indeed a true Hindu, you will surrender without a question as I do. You will understand the scheme of things the way I do.

You think Shiva bothers whether you enter a temple after downing a peg of whiskey or in lungi. Or having your periods! Omg is this what you have reduced Dharma to. My kind of faith is entirely on another range. Man made decorum is fine. But upto a certain degree. Over that, all that matters is only the matter of the heart. With so much of bias at heart thinking lowly of others, I do not know how anyone can hope to get closer to ‘realization.’

Or guys be ready to flash your iyer or iyengar card at Kailasha or Vaikuntha when you get there. This is the kind of God you believe in.

Some Hindus are parasitic. They wouldn’t stop from feeding on those below them in ranks. This is why Dharma is dying.

History Sculpted In Tamil Nadu Temples Today

There is not a single Shastra Sampradhaya or dharmika the Hindu by race has not flouted as yet, on record and off the record. Why kicking up this new fuss now?!

*******************************

Every forward step a society takes has been historically met with stiff resistance only. Nothing has come easy for some of us.

Whether it was blacks fighting for their equal rights against apartheid or women suffrages claiming adult franchise, no single victory for the oppressed came without struggle or sacrifice even in the world’s largest democracy America.

In India, we have been for reforms since the times of Abolition of Sati (when Hindu women were forced to jump into the funeral pyres of their husbands and end their lives). The Independence movement in India was also coupled with achieving social justice for the reserved categories which materialized as an Act to the effect in 1947. The year truly marks freedom of many a kind.

With the temple doors flung open for the Harijan or Dalit however we may call them, a new social order began to emerge in India, much to the chagrin of those who flourished at the expense of the marginalized communities for centuries.. From then on to now, the communities who lived on the fringes have been subject to countless harassments and ridicule, belittling and discouraging them from taking bold steps forward. Mental cruelty continues to be the general methodology adopted to snuff out the self-esteem of the deprived who are finally emerging out of their shadows.

It is never easy to leave behind the slave mentality. Or what we may call the ‘the Stockholm syndrome.’ Do we Indians consider ourselves above that or are we still having a little residual Raj hangover. Just to tell someone that, ‘yes i am good, and as good as you, and may be even better than you!’ in the eye takes some courage and confidence.

Another milestone in modern Indian history was marked with women winning equal share of entitlement to family estate-property in Undivided Hindu Families (HUF). Very recently the triple talak for Indian muslim women was also squashed by law.

Which legal enactment did not make the Indian men frown? Our society reacted to every move for advancement with a convoluted response only. Very recently, we were fighting for women’s entry to Sabarimala. Without a court battle, with the emancipation and accomplishment of the Indian Nari in general, this would be a reality in under twenty to thirty years.

Forever an admirer of EVR who led the social reforms from the forefront in the state from during the times of Gandhi, today when channel surfing I came across the news that a woman Odhuvar has been appointed and a handful of OBC Archakas were also sworn in to serve as priests in the Agama temples, of course on graduating from Vedic schools.

Kudos to the government of Tamil Nadu. Normally I have reservation against Dravidian politics. But I also happen to strongly believe that a just and equitable society is the only way we can move forward. If we are to stop the nation from lapsing into civil war or chaos in future, it is imperative that we establish an order of social justice in the society in the present times.

I don’t watch tv news these days so i am not sure how much coverage this great leap to my state Tamils was reported in national media. Where credit is due, it has to be given. The southern states of India are faring well because, the political leaders from here (corrupt or otherwise) still stuck to their guns and pushed for social reforms that left leave ripple effect in the society.

The current move to introduce woman odhuvar and OBC archakas in our places of worship, can have potential to arrest conversions. If not for EVR, the entire SC/ST bunch could be converted lot today. By throwing open the temple doors and ushering them in, Periyar promised them equality and justice.

Those who work for or live in foreign countries must know: how we have to work double harder to prove that we are equally good or even better probably. Forever having lived my life in hostile territory, I can understand what it takes to arrive even at this point of a ‘test.’

May the woman odhuvar and the newly appointed OBC archakas prove their detractors wrong, with their meticulous service at the temples. This is just a beginning.

When Hindu women in India are free to divorce and marry twice, when we allow our sons to butcher and skin goats and buffalos for a livelihood at posh five star hotels and our daughters fly airplanes, we can stop short of nothing in future, when it comes to embracing all humanity as one. The Hindu hypocrisy tests our patience. Hindus cite the Mogul era for barbarity and bloodshed, but forget that the passive aggression that we had had put in practice was far more heinous. For generations some of us prospered stamping on the self-respect and dignity of a section of humanity.

To those who are since taking a shaking baby step forward, let us lend a helping hand to reach out and steady their course first.

Churchill gave Indian Union maximum five years life before we could collapse, when the British left India in 1947. Here we are today, 75 years and alive and kicking. May be the British would go bonkers but India will survive to eternity. Let us not make a similar mistake of underestimating fellow humanity. Underutilized/unearthed potential can work like a powerful fertilizer on fresh soil.

We have been wanting to free the Tamil Nadu temples’ administration from the government clutches for a while now, which is thoroughly justified in every sense. The state has no ethical or legal rights to spend the revenues from the Hindu places of worship on governance. At the same time, I can’t stop wondering whether such a temple reform as of today would have been made possible otherwise. After all, we needed a statute to open the temples to a section of humanity even in 1947. We needn’t have waited for law to enforce equal rights for one and all.

Review: The Spirit Of Enquiry: Notes Of Dissent : T M Krishna

Recommendation: Buy this book, read this book!

In the spirit of the book ‘The spirit of enquiry’ by TM Krishna, I feel obliged to make the following enquiries with the author:

  • Since you are so brash and bold, and are such a hi-fi social activist, may I expect you to take up the matter of liberating the temple elephants held captive in Kerala please? Your communist friends and none less than CM Pinarayi Vijayan may come to your aid here. You may take up the issue right from your next concert in a Kerala temple be it Vadukkunatha temple in Thrissur or Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram! Please start a campaign to this effect because it looks like a lost cause already. I am willing to make a decent contribution. I shall sponsor your team’s t shirts and logo expenses plus others. Only Aug 12 we observed the World Elephant Day bro. Observed, not celebrated, because what is there to celebrate. Our elephant population is dwindling at lightening speed that for next generation, we might be able to show elephant only in museum or biology book. And when the elephants go, they will take away with them the bees and the trees, do you know that Krishna.
  • Since you are against Guru Shishya Parampara and at the same time also against institutionalizing music with a set syllabus and university and text books, would you please research and educate us how to go about both imparting and learning Classical music to enthusiastic aspirants. Or more specifically Karnatic music.
  • Is there anyone preventing by legal means or by physical means the general janata from learning or mastering carnatic music or instrumental? You can name and shame the parties here for further action by concerned authorities!
  • Is there anyhing sacred to you at all? You don’t respect or probably recognize national anthem, notion of nationality… in short anything that is an arrangement or discipline or institution. How about the institution of marriage? Should this also be dismantled by mankind. Already it is being done just that in many parts of the world! Wait it is coming to India!
  • Answer this: How many islamic nations are there in the world? How many christian nations are there ? How many Hindu nations are there officially as of today.
  • From Jerusalem, what stopped you from meeting with the Yazidis on your way back to India??
  • Who told you World war II or the year 1947 is the defining line for everything. That we cannot change anything after that. When did Bangladesh come into being. How many temples got razed in Pakistan after 1947. How many temples got razed even in Malaysia. If you are to quote the constitution, let us make some amendments then.

Having said that, let me add some salient points from this fine book. Let me make it clear, i am just a housewife past my prime, and I am here only for timepass.

At the outset, I have to give the author a standing ovation, for the way he has thoughtfully constructed each and every sentence with such a depth, insight, meaning and essence to leave a lasting impact on the reader. Exceptionally articulate and versatile, I have never read such a profound writing in my life, especially coming from an Indian author. I must confess I am not much into non-fictions. Even so, I can vouch this is one very fine assessment of so many, many faculties of human brain and behaviour. I share many of the author’s abstract views that he has so artfully captured into precise words, phrasing them just exactly as I would have wanted them to be and working out unimaginable permutation of ideas and possibilities with that skillful penmanship of his. Proud that he is a fellow Chennaiite, a Thamizh, and a local Alwarpet Andavaa 😀 I really feel like adopting this fine young man as my kutti brother!

Now when I finally finish the book, i get his formula. He is like, proposing an idea, treats it to various interpretations pro and anti, discusses it thoroughly inside out with his self-confessed spirit of enquiry and then tries to deliver a balanced judgment. Or I must say, which side he thinks is heavily favoured. Judgment is one word anathema to this author! The author has paid attention to the voice of the dissent that we seldom get to hear in every single idea he discusses chapter after chapter. That treatment deserves respect and commendation. The spectrum of the debates is varied and priceless covering Karnatic to Kashmir.

I liked the way he discussed how and why Karnatic music came to be the classical and not the vintage folk or tribal for instance that also may have a matching antiquity. The same words that come to his mind when he thinks of classical Karnatic also keep coming to my mind: ancient, hoary, superior, intellectual, elevating, traditional, religious, complex, difficult, subtle, sophisticated. So that sets apart Karnatic from the rest. Like Kamal Hasan the author never gives a definite conclusion! I had to keep looking at TMK the way I was looking at the limping man fading away in ‘Anbe Sivam’ as the screens went down! Anyway, that was one brilliant way of thrashing a point and closing the chapter. Kudos!

I never so far distinguished between stage art (live rendering) and, the kind of art where the art object seems to be independent of its creator at the point when it is received (as in the case of an oil painting or cinema). Thanks for reminding us of this quintessential difference. This is the reason I have started reading TMK. He draws my attention to things I took for granted all this time that I forgot their existence. I do remember this point from his last book ‘Sebastian and sons’ when receivers of art (such as musical instrument Mrdangam for instance) have this disconnect with makers of the art. But is this not true of every profession. Do teachers and doctors and builders exercise proprietary rights over their produce. I am at loss to know why the author cannot make that professional distinction. That detachment or sense of separation for the creator from his object or art is necessary in some sectors (but not all). In this digital age when the stage concert can come to our living rooms, even Karnatic classical is being packaged an art that can be delivered like celluloid cinema. Covid has altered many equations. As TMK avers, this may be a step in evolution of Karnatic.

The author has a valid point on computer generated music that can do serious damage to the musical sense in humankind once and for all. In his words, “The composer today has become more of an arranger, a choice-maker, a compiler …. The composer in gaining technological mastery is losing musical relevance ” Which is kind of sad. I made up my mind never to enjoy the sax music or keyboard in future. Or even the steely sounding ear-piercing drums. This is very educative to layman like me although I had had an idea.

Hard-hitting truth: ” .. most of the time it is the item number that musically echoes the subaltern sound, further polarizing musical understandingIt is also true that the section of the population that will probably for certain have ‘Kolaveri’ on their list will never be asked their all time favourites.

On an entirely different tack now: Zero tolerance for plagiarism of traditional, native, ancient Karnatic music which is divinely Hindu by heritage. Let TMK not confuse appropriation of art with inspirations of art.

Loved the use of metaphors and simile comparing original Karnatic compositions with variations to the handblock handmade textile prints and dyes and weaves of India that come with a human error which is charming. On this, I have to agree with the author cent percent. Such a rich tapestry of choicest words and eloquence. Masterpiece. And cute!

In any society the dominant class determines authenticity, quality and standard.” The author simply drove home a brilliant point, point blank. The ensuing paras need a careful contemplation from the book.

…. Nada… is metaphysical…. . The idea of nada is not interpreted only as an abstract experience of transcending sounds, it is considered also a sound that unifies man with the paramatma.” Can’t put it in better words. A layman can make out what classical is all about or get clear picture about its components from this dissection on Karnatic.

So is Hindustani more refined than Karnatic. May be. It could be the difference between the sweetish bhasha Hindi and the tongue twister called Thamizh.

The technicality of the raga, kriya/laya/tala is fascinating to layman like me. Thanks for this explanation. I think the quality of my understanding of music can get better with this. Raga not to be bottled up in any one context representing a particular emotion? This is tough. Because I always associated Todi, Mukhari to despair and despondency and meloncholy thanks to our T Rajender !! But classical is definitely an emotion. No two opinions on that. The chapter on classical is too good even if its too technical.

Classical is abstract. I find this abstract thing always a curious thing that I can’t figure out. True of abstract form of art (oil on canvas) as well. Without deep thinking, I just imbibe the honeyed melody and move on. To me personally carnatic is…. peace? harmony? calming? soothing? balm? divine?

The author has laid specific emphasis on the state of the Isai Vellala community which gave the finest classical art forms of Bharat Natyam dance and Karnatic music to Thamizh Nadu, India. He does have a valid point here. I must say that from the community which is now engaged with economic emancipation via university education, we can expect a flowback into Karnatic as socially forward generations will have more time and resources to take up art once again among them. And this time, they shall command respect and attention.

The author’s take on the concert scene is also realistic. Let us hope things will change for the better in future.

The book is too technical in places and a bit rambling (!) but all is well that ends well! With TMK the prose is matchless and authentic and inspiring and motivating and even enquiring! He opens up avenues of my mind that hitherto remained closed to introspection. Intense and heavy, saturated with dense inside information, this print is a collection of previously published articles of the author in media, with or without edits.

I am leaving out the political discussions here AS WELL AS THE CONTROVERSIES as our author is known for his penchant for mischiefs. This post in winding! Many stalwarts will be reviewing this gem of a book of his. Still I thought I must also review it hahaha whether the author likes it or not!

I will close with this personal note to the author: Even the intention can go a long way when it comes to a good deed which may or may not materialize. To borrow from Paul Coelho, ‘when you want something , all the universe conspires in helping with you to achieve it!’ Best of luck, but do not forget the Indian wild elephant and the temple elephant.

Commercializing Violence On Women In Soaps

I have done blog posts on physical violence on women and I have been harsh on Indian cinema for including scenes of sexual violence on women in their content.

Now I am watching Spanish soaps in Netflix in which I find the same scenario which is shocking. To tell the truth, the serials tell a good story. They are period pieces done with a very fine taste otherwise. A treat to watch really. I got to see ‘the Cook of Castamar’ and ‘ the Cathedral by the sea’ both of which were interesting, but still had violent scenes on women shot with nitty gritty details. Now I am watching ‘the High seas’ which also already has had a violent episode on women.

Until now I thought it was our Indian film industry that resorted to such cheap gimmicks to cash in on sensationalizing crime scenes. Looks like, this is international formula now. Disgusted. Even if the script warrantees, I guess the script writer and director can still work their way around such a distasteful scene and avoid it at all costs. It can’t be impossible for creative people to circumvent frames that can leave women fuming and cringing. No, you don’t even have to leave a hint. I wonder what these folks can gain from including gory scenes of violence on women in their productions.

There obviously is no censorship which must help? Assaulting women is one thing, trying to pass off crimes on women normalizing them with films, soaps etc., is another. It is almost as if this can be routine and may be acceptable. This is what the rape scenes in pictures did to the illiterate masses in India. Everyone out there seems to be for a quick buck. If we cannot help a cause, at least let us not try to deteriorate the situation. Women are still vulnerable whichever part of the world we may be, how much ever we may be accomplished. Casual inclusion of violence on women, sexual assault on women and physical abuse of women need to be done with in our flicks. No, this cannot be for public consumption.

The Spiritual Honesty.

Someone told me Gurus would teach only the worthy ones (meaning upper caste) and not the ‘crooked ones’ meaning others. That really got me thinking. I felt a pity for the one who said this.

Because in one of the stories we read for a Vratha, there is something for exactly those like these:

Someone who refuses to teach and someone who refuses to feed people at home are reborn as a fruitless mango tree and a ‘malattu’ (barren) cow that does not breed. The mango tree does not flower and yield a single nectarlike mango fruit to make anyone happy and the cow cannot be milked. Both attain despair in frustration that is unspeakable and live a life of uselessness in their next janam that shatters their heart. Karma is unique and different. If this story cannot pass on a message to anyone, what can. Well this is how Sanatana Dharma deals with the sin of holding back knowledge you ought to share with everyone. This gem always is my favourite even if it may be a myth.

Of course we don’t have to dive deep into the Dharmic ocean to find a solution to everything.

‘Annaparavaiyai pola’ – the mythical swan that could separate milk from water for consumption, that is how we must mold ourselves. We must imbibe what is best for us and discard what is junk.

All the scriptures and academic degrees cannot bring in realization to some which is sad. The hypocrisy of sticking to discrimination arguing in favour of social injustice is appalling. Much more disturbing is the tendency to underestimate others. This kind of mindset is already breeding mediocrity all around us. Some of us can take insults in our stride and move on. If we are going to talk back to every barking dog, we cannot reach our destination. Some of us have not come this far in life if we are to be perturbed by every single barb that is thrown at us.

Some of us have faced racial slurs at work, discriminations and favoritisms valiantly in life and survived. We have lived the toughest way not relying for support on softening cushions.

As for me, I have always lived life in hostile territory with no fallback option. I think that has made me strong, and into whatever confused mass that I am. At least I am clear on some basics.

Mostly I have observed that, in life, it is those who have never stepped out of their comfort zones who judge people. If you live as minority in an alien terrain even for a short while, you will know you don’t matter, and none of that you think important may actually be relevant. Nothing about you could make sense and you are but a tiny atom in this universe, so insignificant and unnoticeable.

I am now convinced of why and how India remains stagnant. Lacking empathy and neutrality and sense of justice can never bring in progress. You suppress potential talent pool. How do you know without even giving a chance for 2-3 generations to prosper, for those who are not even having their first time graduates in their families. Had the Americans thought so, an Obama would not have been there. That is the mark of a literate, mature, truly democratic society. Whereas in India, the privileged kids going to posh schools want to vie for reservations on par with Panchayat school kids who walk to taluk schools on bare foot for kilometers.

I am glad I do not come from a family that attaches itself to a cultivated Guru. I am happy for my freethinking ways. After reading Narayaneeyam and Lalitha Sahasranamam and having your kids work as chefs butchering and skinning sheep and cow and tasting liquor for serving in five star hotels, you still think that Maths must teach only the privileged by caste, then I have no sympathy for anti-conversion lobbies. Wherever dignity is promised, masses move over to there.

But the mango tree and cow story is on my mind now for over 24 hours. It is almost time for the Vratha. Unlike other girls I did not have my parents tell me what to read or how to treat people. I have my Devi guiding my every step. To Her face let the casteists have the honesty and courage to declare how Gurus will not teach the lesser privileged (by virtue of birth) in Hindu Dharma. And how everyone IS and MUST and HAVE TO BE different. And that only they are the best.

Or probably the seers are right. Which is why they have not come up with a successor for Kanchi Mutt until now.

Indian medallists in Tokyo Olymipics 2021

  1. Mirabai Chanu Silver Medal in Weight Lifting (Women’s 49kg)
  2. Indian Hockey Team Bronze Medal in Men’s Hockey tournament
  3. PV Sindhu Bronze Medal in Women’s Single Badminton
  4. Lovlina Borgohain Bronze Medal in Women’s Welterweight Boxing
  5. Ravi Kumar Dahiya Silver Medal in Men’s 57 kg Wrestling
  6. Bajrang Punia Bronze Medal in Men’s Freestyle 65kg
  7. Neeraj Chopra Gold Medal in Men’s Javelin Throw: 87.58 (First Gold Medalist from India in Olympics 2021)

India has won a single gold, 2 silvers and 4 bronzes in Tokyo Olympics 2021. But only if you are born and raised in India will you ever realize what a Himalayan feet even this is. Our poor stamina by genetics is main reason thanks to our food habits, for our below par sporting capabilities. Our make is small! Just look at the Czechs who won the bronze and silver in the Javelin throw. Look at the gold medalist Neeraj Chopra from India. Look at our Hockey girls. When they lost the bronze, I could see their physique despite rigorous training and practice and most definitely improvised dietary plans compared to their opponents. I don’t suppose strategy alone can do wonders. You need physical inputs more in the sporting arena. Even a voracious meat eating Indian cannot match the stamina of the sportspeople from other parts of the world whose daily dietary food habit may include red meat. Indians do not eat red meat by culture right from birth. Coaches may introduce meat and high calorie food at a later stage during training still, the very basic nutritious food is denied for aspiring Indian sportsmen and women hailing from rural India from a very young age. This works to our disadvantage in the long run. Looking at our women’s hockey, I felt bad for them. But they have come this far. Next time, there won’t be any stopping them.

Secondly the poverty of the country is well known. Most Olympic aspirants in India do not even own a good pair of shoes. Nor do they get to eat two square meals a day. They lack family support hailing from rural backgrounds mostly with parents for daily wage earners. For training, they have to walk by foot miles. They don’t have access to technology or food supplement or decent sports gear or good coaching or physical training. Very poor funding. No logistics to support them for their travel needs. Other countries subsidize their teams but in India, this just is not possible. All commercial sponsors in India eye the cricket teams, never those who play for India in Olympics or Asian games.

Nations import or buy out athletes and sports persons and teams and sports clubs to add golds and trophies to their kitties. India does not. Every single Indian sports player is born and brought up in India under extraordinary circumstances. On the contrary, Indian hockey players have played for Malaysia in the past.

*Inspiring story of Rani Rampal, Capt Indian Women’s HockeyTeam👏*: “I wanted an escape from my life; from the electricity shortages, to the mosquitoes buzzing in our ear when we slept, from barely having two square meals to seeing our home getting flooded when it rained. My parents tried their best, but there was only so much they could do–Papa was a cart puller and Maa worked as a maid. There was a hockey academy near my home, so I’d spend hours watching players practice–I really wanted to play. Papa would earn Rs.80 a day and couldn’t afford to buy me a stick. Everyday, I’d ask the coach to teach me too. He’d reject me because I was malnourished. He’d say, ‘You aren’t strong enough to pull through a practice session.’ So, I found a broken hockey stick on the field and began practicing with that– I didn’t have training clothes, so I was running around in a salwar kameez. But I was determined to prove myself. I begged the coach for a chance– maine bahut mushkil se convince kiya unko finally! But when I told my family, they said, ‘Ladkiya ghar ka kaam hi karti hai,’ and ‘Hum tumhe skirt pehen kar khelne nahi denge.’ I’d plead with them saying, ‘Please mujhe jaane do. If I fail, I’ll do whatever you want.’ My family reluctantly gave in. Training would start early in the morning. We didn’t even have a clock, so mom would stay up and look at the sky to check if it was the right time to wake me. At the academy, it was mandatory for each player to bring 500 ml of milk. My family could only afford milk worth 200 ml; without telling anyone, I’d mix the milk with water and drink it because I wanted to play.My coach supported me through thick and thin; he’d buy me hockey kits and shoes. He even allowed me to live with his family and took care of my dietary needs. I’d train hard and wouldn’t miss a single day of practice. I remember earning my first salary; I won Rs.500 after winning a tournament and gave the money to Papa. He hadn’t ever held so much money in his hands before. I promised my family, ‘One day, we’re going to have our own home’; I did everything in my power to work towards that. After representing my state and playing in several championships, I finally got a national call up at the age of 15! Still, my relatives would only ask me when I was planning on getting married. But Papa told me, ‘Play until your heart’s content.’ With my family’s support, I focused on doing my best for India and eventually, I became captain of the Indian hockey team! Soon after, while I was at home, a friend papa used to work with visited us. He brought along his granddaughter and told me, ‘She’s inspired by you and wants to become a hockey player!’ I was so happy; I just started crying. And then in 2017, I finally fulfilled the promise I made to my family and bought them a home. We cried together and held each other tightly! And I’m not done yet; this year, I’m determined to repay them and Coach with something they’ve always dreamed of– a gold medal from Tokyo.”A story behind do many athletes…we often wonder why we don’t win medals in Olympics … I am proud that they made it to Olympics despite the adversity… this is today’s India… aspirational, confident and will to fight adversity and excel… hats off to them…hope they get the encouragement and support for the future too….🙏🏽

The rest of the stories are here:

Hearing the Indian national anthem play gives you goosebumps! Grateful for these medal winners from the Tokyo Olympics who have done the nation proud. Those who have no medal to show – it is still fine. You have had the honour of representing this 1.3 billion nation which is something. I did expect a gold from PV Sindhu but we have to remember that she is also ageing. Still fine Sindhu, I didn’t mean like complaining. Absolutely no regrets. Indebted to these ambassadors of peace from India who showed us, yes we still can. With all our misgivings and self-doubts and weaknesses and vulnerabilities and negatives and lacking any and every sophisticated sporting equipment/first class training/physical fitness/red meat on our plate, we Indians still can!

Jai Hind! Thank you brothers and sisters for instilling valuable self-confidence and slef-esteem in young Indians who need to believe in themselves first. Every barrier between you to victory is there to be broken.

Hindu Temple Vandalized/Destroyed In Pakistan. Dear bhais, why can’t you speak up now?

Hindu temple vandalized and destroyed just day before yesterday in Pakistan. No national news coverage.

No coverage in NDTV BBC (known for their anti-Hindu stance) (PM Modi kick BBC out of India NOW). NO coverage in Middle East.

No word from our Indian minorities. Indian muslims MUM on this strangely. Why should they open their mouth anyway. Did they ever condemn terrorism openly? Never. This silence of theirs is sickening! How many Pakis condemned the attack. Will the guilty be punished.

Shame on you playboy Imran Khan! Even your children seem to be oozing with hatred and venom.

Not even Modi’s India is giving a thought to the plight of Pak hindus. They seem to have been left to their worst fates.

No substantial news coverage in Pak. Especially Paki journalists have been maintaining a stoic silence. . The cowards could not even bring themselves to name the victims. Stopping short of mentioning the word ‘Hindu’ they clung to their ‘minority’ summation as usual. Not surprising coming from the hypocrites who reduce Hindustani music to Eastern music claiming and usurping the Hindu music for their religious purposes at the same time.

Our Indian leftist-communist secular BROTHERS suffering from worst bout of selective amnesia from yesterday. They will recover when there is anti-Hindu news to post from India shortly.

Imagine such a thing happening to ‘their’ place of worship in Hindu majority India. Nothing short of bombs will be following up in market places and railway stations.

So heartbreaking to see this video. When I see the sacrilege of the Murthis I am reminded of this adage in Thamizh, ‘Manidhan andru kollum, deivam nindru kollum.’ It means, man avenges the same day but God waits for the right time.

Sad and traumatized Hindu community of Pakistan: God save these peaceful and the only decent people of the terrorist nation. Living in fear 365 days an year, waiting for their daughters to be kidnapped, raped and converted, what these Paki Hindus are going through is something the whole world must pay attention to. It is time India absorbs them all.

1 kilo Peace & Harmony please!

Today in Sai Charitha was a chapter that tried to answer whether Sai Baba of Shirdi was Hindu or Muslim. It was simply not possible to determine what He was/is. I am not a guru centric Hindu but I reckon the great spirits born among us as Mahans. Sometimes I think they are the God we are failing to see who live in our own times. Yet I have my doubts at the same time. Whatever, I hold Shirdi Baba and Puttarbarthi Sai Baba in highest esteem because of their humanitarian services where and when they thought of all human beings as equals irrespective of their caste or religion or literacy level or socio-economic status. They were unlike any of the religious gurus such as the Shankaracharyas before them, in bringing humanity together with their selfless services. No Hindu seer until now for that matter, has been capable of such a simple organic initiative for uniting the Hindu community divided on the basis of castes that could have helped Hindu Dharma grow, with conversions going down as a consequence. Perhaps the reason is, Hindu seers are mostly ‘cultivated’ and do not get to become pontiffs without an ulterior motive, which in most cases is casteist. Whereas the Sai Babas are mahans who got their calling that turned them towards spirituality. They became the seekers. They were discovered by the masses. They didn’t need to get appointed in office or introduced. They did not need to be nurtured, fine-tuned. In front of Sai everyone is one and the same.

Reading about the Urs being observed on the day of Sri Rama Navami at Shirdi since the year 1912, moved me. I am no less critical of the so-called ‘peacefuls’ and I mince no words when it comes to calling a spade a space where it concerns their bloody violent ways. But co-existence is the only way out, this i am aware of, for the peace and stability of not just India but this entire world. Nobody was saviour from the start, and it is only centuries before that we had the war of the crusades. If Christianity is indeed so noble and service-oriented, then there would have been no slave trade or apartheid or ethnic cleansing of natives from Africa, Australia and Latin America. Just who are we kidding. What was Hitler and what did he do. To Who. Who bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Where did all Gods go then. Did we have the word ‘terrorism’ at all in the 1940s.

This is why I believe, every religious fold will come around and mature at its own time. The oldest have turned around. We have to give time for the newest to make it at their own convenience. But one day it will happen.

Baba attained Samadhi long before the partition of the nation. I wonder what He would have had to say had He been around until then. Given that He was for holding Urs alongside Sri Ram Navami celebrations, we have to still admit that Baba was non-political. As the chapter detailed, priestly brahmins and agnihotris were His followers who practically resided with Him in the dargah or very closest to Him, even as muslims too sought Him. No human being can turn away from a good soul and at that point of time when you come across a noble soul, you forget to see if He/She is Hindu or Muslim.

My brought-up is such that, inspite of my strong political opinion, I can’t help crossing myself whenever I pass via a church. I also pause for a few seconds if I sight a mosque in India. It doesn’t always have to be a Hindu temple. Even today during Puja i heard a prayer siren. For 30 sec., I observe this silence. Your heart grows still whether you are follower of the alien faith or not. You simply reckon the One Supreme whoever He/She may be wherever from. That is how I was raised. To show respect to all living beings and even inanimate objects. I don’t need reciprocation or approval. I shall continue to be me unconcerned about others’ respect or regard for me, favourable or unfavourable. My happiness, my peace I value more over others’ priorities.

I felt a calm reading this chapter in Thamizh really that spoke of ‘Shanthi’ or peace that is so elusive these days to humankind. Conflict has become our everyday business. We subsist/survive on negativity and pessimism and hatred. Just who are we to condemn or sentence anyone. Who gave us the right to judge others.

I wish the peace of Shirdi in the year 1912 prevails in India today and to eternity.

Why can’t world hope for such a peace and harmony at all times. Hindus and Muslims historically could never live together, yet could live together at the same time. Hindus are a finicky lot I know as a practising Hindu, but Indian muslims must be aware of the Hindu sensitivity because Bharat (India) is home to Dharmic faith and traditions as ancient as the very human civilization. Hindus must not expect from the muslims to prove their patriotism at the drop of their hat. It must hurt horrendously. As for Indian christians, all they have to do is STOP CONVERSIONS using bribes and kick out the foreign missionary mafia, saying a big NO TO EVANGELISM. Indian muslims can try having small families and get better educated. This is all it takes to reassure our Hindu population of one’s good intentions. Hindus must learn to respect and trust both Christians and Muslims. Afterall, if someone left after 1947 it means they found something wanting in Dharma. I am not talking of Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists as they come under the Dharmic fold.

Let us fill our homes and hearts with positive vibes, let us think and speak the best about fellow humans, let us learn to trust each other first. Just go through my old posts. How critical I am about the Abrahamics. But nowhere in my blog have I cheapened anyone or spilled venom or spread the hatred. I have criticized the Abrahamics with due respect to them! I strongly believe that, what we must never wound is, someone’s self-respect and dignity. We don’t have to diminish or demolish someone to establish ourselves. Let go. Like water finds its own surface, Hindu Dharma will find its way through the chaos and mess.

God has no chance with a loveless heart.

Let us give peace a chance. Om Shanti! Om Sai Ram!

What Veda or Upanishad my part-time househelp read. Her raw bhakthi is most appealing to me and I value her as a better Hindu. She who cannot differentiate between Karma and Dharma spreads her goodness and sunshine all around her. Never tarnishes anyone or anything. Wouldn’t invent an excuse for her shortfalls. Resigned to her social status that she is well aware of being a consequence of our cursed caste system. Yet not a single complaint in life. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter where you are, what is your position. A simple sweet life full of love and affection and hardwork and sincerity and fulfillment and contentment, quality-wise can be so fulfilling and rewarding. That is how I view life. What takeaway can others have from my (insignificant) life. Love or hatred. Positivity or Negativity. Optimism or Pessimism. Cheer & spirit or abusive foul language. Motivation & Inspiration or Despair & Vendetta.

Contractor vs Consultant.

This is a pretty lengthy write-up not yet edited. Plus this needs validation by my civil engineer husband. Here is the unedited version.

***********************************

There is this kind of dilemma that civil engineering professionals face in their careers. Whether to continue working for contractors or to join a consultant company.

Among the contractors one may be Class A category or Subcon (subcontractor who leases work from the main contractor – this could be compared to something like ‘outsourcing’). The civil contractors are the grounds persons who are in charge of the actual execution of an infrastructure project whatever it may be.

A steel designs company drawing up the structural drawings could be the structural engineering consultants for a project, in charge of supplying design frameworks (with which normally projects commence).

Consultants are totally different league from contractors, overseeing the execution of a civil project undertaken by and for the contractor on behalf of client(s), hired for a fee. Besides the structural engineers, the consultants could also be mechanical, electrical and even planning etc., the scope for which may be included in the civil projects. For instance, a highway project may have utilities to be provided (such as cable network, sewerage, power supply, water pipelines etc., ) which will have to be summarily executed by the civil contractors for which the consultant companies may provide service. These additional scopes of work entailing mechanical and electrical inputs may be covered mostly by the respective departments etc., from the parent contracting company. It is generally so with mammoth organizations that mostly have functioning civil, mechanical and electrical divisions with impressive logistics and manpower at their disposal. In some cases, for cost cutting, the civil contracting company may also outsource these extra but inclusive works to a third party subcontractor. Many a time this may prove to work out as an economic and timesaving option.

Contracts usually are awarded on the basis of EPCM, Engineering-Procurement-Construction-Maintenance. The contractors may appoint consultants on approval of clients. The case where the clients award only Procurement-Construction and not maintenance, the former may opt to choose the consultants for the projects. There is another contract model BOT which is Build-Operate-Transfer which is mostly the case of those mega projects such as sewerage plants or power plants.

So essentially, the clients could be mostly the state for who private contractors work overseen by a various disciplines of consultants. This is how civil projects of any nature are undertaken for completion. Rarely there are private infrastructural works. Bypassing the housing sector, let me limit this post to industrial infrastructures.

How do projects commence. How are they awarded, and to whom and why.

The idea for civil or mega infrastructure projects germinates as societies grow and the need for civic amenities multiplies simultaneously. This necessitates building of more dams and reservoirs, highways, airports, water pipelines, sewerage, oil tanks etc besides developing housing colonies. Experts visualize the expansion plans and make a way for providing for the facilities in upcoming budget outlays. There are also five year plans, annual plans etc., floated by national governments and state governments with a view to give more impetus to promote better infrastructure to raise the quality of public life. Good statesmen may think a hundred years ahead when executing and commissioning mega infrastructure projects.

Once the ideas proposed by thinktanks get govt nod, first of all a feasibility study may be undertaken. Many ambitious projects get dropped right at this initial stage before they could even hope for a take off.

Next is the environmental clearance which is mandatory nowadays.

When all the conditions are met, finally it may appear that the said project could be undertaken and fulfilled. It is at this stage that the government may think of appointing a contractor who may accomplish the task for them.

Tenders are floated by respective departments inviting quotes from qualified bidders for awarding of projects. In India, the tenders are advertised in national newspapers and government gazettes. The entire process is to be completely transparent to rule out favouritism or corruption. However this is merely a public gimmick. Normally when projects are in the offing and tendering is to commence, the civil contractors stay alert. A kick-off meeting is usually held in order to detail the bidding parties as to the specifications and scope of works to be awarded. All interested or concerned civil contractors are present to hear and receive the specific details. The terms and conditions and time frame are also discussed in the process. The contractors now have amply material and statistics to study before embarking on the process of bidding for the tender.

In an increasingly competitive world, the construction or contracting companies mostly have departments devoted to this stupendous task of procuring projects, bidding on dot without incurring heavy losses for the organization and at the same time making a slender or handsome profit to make the project viable. Through all this they have to keep an eye on the timeframe, manpower and even machinery. The idling of machinery is burdensome and can incur great losses for the company, not just the nondeployment of manpower/labour.

Competent construction companies may bid for the tenders after arriving at their own costs on careful homework on the project to be awarded. A few may engage the services of consultants even at this stage to crosscheck their cost projections. Needless to say, the contractors have to cover themselves from all fronts right from this point. The most competitive bidder will naturally be bagging the contract which will be justifiable normally with this proven track record when it comes to fulfilling civil contract obligations.

Final estimate for bidding a tender floated for any civil construction project is arrived at after a detailed analysis of overheads such as material costs, labour, consultant fee etc., to which finally a decent margin of profits could be added. The terms and conditions in asterisk marks need a cautious contemplation on the part of the contractor as these mostly mask the hidden costs and charges. Almost every single ambiguity about charges needs to thrashed and disposed off beyond doubt at this stage. Such details are listed in the project prospectus distributed to bidding contractors during the kick-off meeting organized by the client side. The meeting can be a productive session for eliminating dubious double charging and seeking clarifications on all salient points. More than a tendering manager and his department, a project head can shed some light in this unchartered grey area.

The escalation of project costs due to non availability of raw material or machinery or manpower or rising costs of one or all of them cannot be ruled out, the provision for which has to be safely built in in the bidding figure. Finally projects are undertaken only when they are viable. However, there are bidders for international infrastructure and mega projects today who intentionally underquote to win the bids for the only reason of gaining a foothold in the construction-contracting world such as the notorious chinese companies. Today they are the biggest headache for quality civil contract and construction companies who have an impressive track record and who are economically viable from every point of view.

Here let me give an example. Let us suppose there is a small civil project with a turnover of say 9 million $ in construction costs including all bills such as labour, raw material, machinery, logistics, consultant fee etc. A company may include a decent margin of 10% and quote the bidding price of tender at 10 million $ for instance. The competitors may bid at say, 8 million $, 11 million $ etc. The bidding parties have to detail their specs such as the brands of raw materials they may be going for, the consultants appointed etc., which may have an impact on project awarding. The clients proposing the project must also find the bidding costs economically viable and the project feasible in which case the project may be awarded to meritorious candidate. Normally the least quoting bidder wins the contract.

(In India, kickbacks alegedly play a role in awarding of contracts. Sad.)

There is legal consultancy and bankers involved through all this. Legality of agreement is verified to mutual satisfaction on either side and the bankers issue bank guarantees to the contractor even at the stage of bidding which is one of eligible criteria for a contractor to bid for the tender.

In India, there may be a crucial and complex step to be overcome in respect of certain civil projects such as highway expansions, building of dams etc. This calls for land acquisitions which in turn may give rise to uprisings in local communities and ensuing legal battles and human rights issues. Compensations for displacements have to be factored in therefore. In middle east countries, government is the deciding authority having a final say in all matters.

So after all these deliberations, finally let us suppose a company bags a coveted infra project spanning three years with a turnover running into millions of dollars, with the legal contract successfully signed to mutual satisfaction of both the client and the contractor wherein the consultants are also listed

Next comes the phase of structural drawings just as we have in our housing plans. Housing is the basic infrastructure which we are not discussing in this post. High rises for all their imposing stance also are one of the most uncomplicated projects to undertake. Cakewalk. In housing, architects have an effective role to play but even so, the role of the structural engineer cannot be any less significant. Now this is the kind of civil engineering most of us are familiar with. Urban based and easy to relate to and executed in hospitable parts of the country, the civil projects of such a nature are dream for fresh graduates of civil engineering. Metro rail projects, expansion of sewerage plants, treatment plants, powerplants etc., within urban limits are most sought after jobs by young engineers today.

The approval of the clients and consultants is necessitated right from the structural drawings, in the case of massive infrastructural projects. Clients, as stated, are the parties for whom construction may be undertaken. For instance, if we have a civil project undertaken in Chennai such as Metro rail, then the client could be the railways department or the state or central govt. Consultant could be the specialized agency giving the company input for execution of the project stage by stage, verifying with the contractor if things are proceeding on right lines, checking on progress, deviations etc. Foreign consultants could also be hired for this purpose. As mentioned before, the consultants may be of various disciplines such as mechanical, electrical in order to cover the scope of the entire civil work to be undertaken. In Metro rail station construction for instance, scope for electrical contractor arises where it concerns power supply. The civil contractor may outsource this work on landing of the entire project. Or the clients may decide on awarding the extra scope to a third party bidder. In any case, the civil contractor team will have to work in tandem with the electrical contractor, either his own subcon or a third party one appointed by the client. In Chennai’s civic body projects, the Public Works Department (PWD) could be the client for whom private contractors may be working winning a bid floated for the purpose. Naturally, the lowest bidder of the tender wins the contract. Which is why, some NASA astonaut once remarked that, he wouldn’t want to think that the space shuttle he was flying in into space had been assembled and put forth by the lowest bidder who won the contract!

Contractors enter the picture after the structural design companies (also consultants) because they are the implementers of any project as per client requirements. We are not discussing clients here who may be viewed like film producers. The clients role ends with production supply such as financing. The clients may have specifications that may need to be adhered to.

The contractors also mostly engage Consultants for their services for a fee bundle. The clients may need their professional counselling to check whether the work undertaken is to satisfaction and standards prescribed. There is a window for time schedule as well to ensure progress. Mostly the consultants are appointed to the mutual agreement of the client and the contractor. We have to remember here that the consultant loyalty will always lie with the client.

‘Who to work for’ is a big question that arises in every budding civil engineer’s mind. A contractor’s job is that of execution and a consultant’s work is to oversee, kind of cool, even as the client pays for the work. So young engineering graduates always want to gyrate towards consultant offices as working under a contractor is tough and demanding in worst climatic conditions. Even the package drawn by consultants may be better than the contractors who may however merit bonuses on remarkable performances of showing profits.

For that matter, core engineering such as mechanical or civil or chemical never pay as much as the software industry. However there is slow and steady growth in these divisions and the pink slips may never be heard of. The core sector never goes out of fashion although like anything else, gets updated continuously. In my experience I have found the core engineers to be very passionate about their chosen careers. Unless one has the right attitude, he/she must not opt for core engineering in my opinion. The going is tough. Not everyone can become part of the management. Core engineering deploys more works people on the ground.

Married to a civil structural engineer who has always wanted to work only for a contractor so that he can be in the thick of action doing the actual work. My husband is not for the consultant kind of table work which he admits is no cakewalk either. Structural engineering can fry one’s brains. On the other side is my son who is a structural engineer specialized in steel structure. He would like to work for green projects and would want to involve himself in software applications in the field of civil engineering. For old school guys like my husband, this is unthinkable. Years of running around under scorching sun, commanding power and running the show and controlling his team and executing the projects give him the adrenaline rush. Today’s youngsters who play computer games instead of street cricket in hot Chennai sun, says my husband, lack the stamina and vigor and mental strength that are demanded by tough industrial civil engineering projects such as his.

‘If everyone wants to straight away become a consultant, then who will dirty his hands and foot and work for the contractor? who will actually execute a project and accomplish a good infrastructure?’ asks he. If no engineer is willing to man an oil well or the rig or the powerplant, then the world will only grind to an abrupt halt. Someone has to do the essential job. Someone has to be there at the spot where oil spouts out where temperature could touch 70C. Someone has to man the reservoirs. Which is why he says, he prefers working for a contractor over consultant.

Today there are advanced machinery for everything, but for decades, for excavation works etc., manual labourers used to be led first. Poisonous gas accumulations such as methane have proved to be lethal in many a case with workers losing life. Even today there are instances of cranes crashing, mudslides etc., taking toll on labour forces. This is how mostly heavy industrial projects begin and function.

There are areas of civil engineering (mostly table work) that are totally mechanized like for instance that of the draftsman. Yet just like we have to have to multiplication tables by heart and know how to use the log book if we have to in case of not having a calculator, the civil engineering men must have their basics thorough.

No wonder not many have an appetite for this kind of work. One has to be both physically and mentally stronger to remain and work in the field for a lifetime. Even your grasp of finance and management must be good because, there is a motive for undertaking huge industrial projects as far as companies are concerned: these infrastructures pay well. Where the mathematics may go wrong and the bidding costs could be low quoted, the contractors risk incurring heavy losses. This is why they go for bank guarantees without which they cannot qualify for the very bidding process of a floated tender. For securing such a bank guarantee of a decent limit, the contractor must have a proven track record. This is where pre-qualified contractors rake the moolah. Freshers have to tough it out.

This is not to state that the companies use substandard materials to secure a project or increasin profit margins. There are standard checks at every stage to ensure that quality is maintained for which the contractors may have a Quality department. The specs have to be listed even in the bidding document which will be uncompromisable unless otherwise there is a block in the supply chain.

Civil companies have Purchases department in charge of the purchase requirements. They take care of the raw materials.

Machinery department overseas overheads such as cranes and other tool and machinery etc.

Logistics department may take care of the transport including movement of labour from camps to setting up of portacabins.

Quality department and safety department have an effective role to play in entire process of execution of a project.

Document controller keeps track of all the transactions and records beginning with the work of the Tender department whose work is over with the bidding process and procurement of the project. Documents pertaining to purchases, machinery, logistics, labour, consultants, clients etc., are maintained in chronological order. These become permanent records of the project for the contracting company.

There may be safety hazards involved for which education and training are mandatory as a precautionary method of prevention. Safety departments handle that and almost every single day an infrastructure project starts with safety protocol. This shows, safety is hardly taken lightly anywhere or any moment. The materials in the projects may weigh a ton, one may have to work at an altitude, climb a dizzy crane etc., that may require standard industrial safety uniform complete with industrial safety boots and steel helmet and aprons to be worn by the workmen.

There is a methodology as to how they go about executing a project from the scratch.

On procurement of project starts the planning outlay, the budgets, the phases of execution and more than all the deployment of manpower and procurement of raw material on assessment. The excess raw material is also not affordable. For instance cement excess procured earlier than the time of requirement or excess in supply will have to be waste if not utilized by another site project, out of which no profit can be seen for the current project. Thus there is a catch here. The resources have to be maintained in such that nothing idles even for a single day. Resources usage and availability may fluctuate but everything has to be balanced.. Extra resources get mobilized at once to alternate projects by any company to ensure that no manual effort or raw material or machinery goes wastes. So many many costs cutting and string pulling to ensure that a decent profit is still made possible for the team.

All this involves a lot, lot of working out of engineering charts, scales, drawings etc. Which is where memory power comes to a great advantage. The ability to remember formulae and industrial standards and tables and figures and stats in hundreds and hundreds to reel out as and when needed without reference is the biggest plus for a project head. You have to have everything in finger tips. When I think that thousands of engineering graduates emerge out of our universities these days without a clue as to what the subject is about, I feel exasperated. When you cannot translate what you see in 2D into 3D, there is no use in learning. Industrial visits by our professional colleges may hardly be sufficient or serving any worthwhile purpose. You need hands on approach in this area.

One of the project head’s role is to finalize the sequence of execution or the phases of execution in order. Just like you cannot fell a tree sitting on a top branch, you cannot commence a project without mapping out the entire project in your mind stage by stage. For instance, the utilities are underlaid which must precede any other construction activity. Pre-existing structures also need to taken into cognizance. There have been instances when in the drawings supplied information on the same has been wanting. Industrial accidents can result from this oversight.

An ambitious project head visualizes the project right from the bidding stage for the tender to structural framework and consultant services such as mechanical, planning, electrical etc.,, taking into consideration the budget outlay and the profit projections, manpower and raw materials, supply chain, time schedule etc to its execution and completion, with a pre-conceptualized order of sequence to follow. His involvement in the project may start with the tendering but not necessarily. A loyal and devoted team may be a big bonus. Teams are decided right the moment the bid is won.

One irony is that, at times the tendering department may be staffed with engineers who lack site experience and who cannot carry on a project themselves taking responsibilities. This can result in shortsightedness on the part of the tenderers and they may peg the quote at a far higher or lower rates than feasible. Too low a quote can procure a project but could net losses for the company. Too high a figure may force clients to drop the company from the race. The range of bid has to be practical and affordable to the client and profitable to the contractor at the same time. The client may first shortlist the eligible companies out of which the final pick is made on studying other important factors such as quality of supply chains, manpower, previous track record of the bidder etc.

Involvement of the project heads in advance in the tendering process therefore may be much valuable step for a contractor firm. Inputs from the site experience and over all management of manpower and material can add to arriving at an approximate bidding figure that may match expectations and work out for all parties concerned.

Manpower deployment on procurement or raw materials and machinery follows.

Volumes of tri-partite correspondence between the contractor, consultant and client come into the fore as each and every inch of progress needs to be reviewed and overviewed and corrected. More meetings, more reviews, more reworkings follow.

Let us say the project is off to a colourful start and proceeds as per schedule or is slightly behind. Every single day of delay is billed separately which can add to losses for the contractor. Accumulated delays can set off a project drastically as time lapses. Sometimes the delay is unavoidable and therefore can be accommodated by the client side on consultant approval. These may later be adjusted by way of variations running into months, that can be billed by the contractor.

Sometimes the client side also may come up with additional scope of work which can also be billed by the contractor.

Rarely the contractors may tie up with other companies for joint venture should the turnover of the project be massive. This increases risk factors for viability and also decreases eligibility criteria for many contractors for even bidding the tender. Normally in such circumstances, a mid or decent level contractor may tie up with a pre-qualified global construction company who may have an automatic bidding access to any civil infra tender worldwide. Agreement between the JV partners will in that case become an inside matter for the contractor. Profit sharing and manpower sharing as well as material allocations are sorted out in advance by the two giant contractors. Signing authorities could also be dual.

Mobilization of raw material and deployment of manpower on smooth functioning of supply chain and nonwastage of any of these added to effective documentation can move the project dramatically forward in a positive way. The morale of the teams working in tandem has to be high at all times. Together the civil project family work the project day and night in an attempt to minimize delays that can be billed on the company. Every hour and every resource saved can add up to their annual bonus, as they are aware of. Yes, this is what they become as they move from project to project: one family. The project head endears himself to his team and their loyalty to him is moving.

For the sheer thrill of such a project execution, some men do not want to move up the ladder to upper hierarchy where you only get to decide on things but not execute the projects. This they may do for their career satisfaction. Also management guys are of different stock unlike the man on ground zero: they can never visualize or execute a project like some gifted men commanding the respect of their teams do. In order to be in such a commanding position, you need to be strong in all areas of relevance.

Project team meets every morning to decide on course of action that day. They also pre-plan fweeks ahead and schedule work as necessitated by the order of sequence suggested by the project head. Construction managers and junior site engineers and site supervisors take control at various steps and down the ladder we have the actual manual labour deployed for the project. These usually are accommodated in a campsite where they are provided food and shelter under the care of the construction company. Mobilization of labour force needs to be quick and effective.

Project sites also have in them medical facilities and safety aids.

Greening of projects is also now undertaken.

Any deviation from the approved drawings or plans will amount to non compliance warranting the Non Compliance Report (NCR) issued by the client. It is important for a contractor to look into this aspect and make the necessary corrections to dispose off such claims beforehand.

Coordination between the civil team and the consultants finally moves the project in a forward direction. The construction company civil site deployment works in tandem with various consultants including mechanical, planning, structural and electrical heads to pull it. As the routine sets in and the project starts taking shape, the civil family heaves a sigh of relief.

A project running ahead of schedule is unheard of mostly but is not altogether impossible. In rare cases, I have heard of this miraculous feat. Such a runaway project is a goldmine for the contractor. A project completed ahead of schedule is like a feather in the cap of the contracting company.

Successful is a project when the client is satisfied with the final output as the contractor team hands over the infrastructure for commissioning to the clients in the presence of the consultant firms. Moment for jubilation!

In the year 1998 when I flew to Malaysia with my son, my husband received us at the airport. He did not drive us straight to our flat as I expected him to. He stopped at the interchange of the Cheras Kajang expressway in the KL suburb which was executed by him complete with RE wall, flyovers etc. We spent thirty minutes here before heading home even as I was bone-tired. But I understood how important it is for some men to look at the projects they have accomplished and pat themselves.

Since then I have been to every single mega/infrastructure/industrial civil project of my husband, access to some of which are denied. Where entry is not permitted, I have watched from the periphery. I have watched his reservoirs and dams, highways and underpasses and bridges and flyovers, huge lofty circular tanks to hold oil, pipelines in hazardous zones where CO2 or H2S ran merely centimeters below the surface…

Salute the civil engineering fraternity for their relentless efforts in giving concrete shape to our dreams! Really a drop of tear rolls down my eyes as I type this…

I married a young man who said his first wife was civil industrial engineering. I hardly paid attention to it. I realized this only with years.

Married into hardcore engineering and medico family, I learnt in course of time what hardwork is all about and how commitment to work is by itself a religion.

I have a brother-in-law who is a metallurgy specialist, probably No.1 in India or at least south India, who runs his own heat treatment plant employing hundreds of workers.

My other brother-in-law is a devoted private practitioner who has never taken a vacation in decades, as his patients are his first concern.

I can understand how one’s occupation or profession or art or whatever becomes their passion. This kind of passion touches me most. The dedication stumps me.

My pranaams to all men who devote so much of their energy and time to such creative passions and processes be it engineering or art or music. You have to have it in you to come to this point. In my understanding of Dharma, these men can have no punar janam. Such is their commitment to their passion, which is also one way to attain Nirvana or Moksha or Mukthi or whatever.

I count it as my life’s greatest blessings that my path has crossed with that of these great men. I can’t ask for more.

Party time: After successful completion of every massive industrial civil engineering/infrastructure project, the construction company’s team celebrates. Milestones such as achievement of thousands of safety manhours are also observed time to time. Nothing like a rewarding bonus package to egg them on to go on and on by the contractor.

Now tell me, who should a young civil engineering graduate fresh out of university opt to work for?

Motivation is the need of the hour for our GenNext to propel them into realistic tangible engineering that can translate into value addition to our society. Our kids lacks a big source of inspiration. Retired engineers can look into this and provide counselling and consultancy services for young engineering graduates.
